The Cup defense season has scarcely begun, but the Washington Capitals are already on the scoreboard. The first goal of the 2018-19 season belongs to Tobias Junkrat Oshie, just 24 seconds into game one. And before two minutes had passed, Evgeny Kuznetsov added a power-play goal.
Say it with me: Back to back.
The Backstrom line owned play on their first shift. Jakub Vrana nearly scored on his first shot, but the puck bounced off Tuukka Rask’s tuukka mask. Backstrom corraled the rebound, allowing Oshie to score short-side from out wide.
The play earned Nicklas Backstrom his 800th career assist.
The Caps kept pressing after that, with Lars Eller drawing a penalty from Sean Kuraly. All of two seconds later, Evgeny Kuznetsov hit the back of the net to make it 2-0.
So, ya know, all in all, not a bad start.
