As Alex Ovechkin is preparing to go into battle for the 2018-19 season, he will literally be going to war… in a popular online game.
World of Warships, a free-to-play naval warfare game, will have Ovechkin be an in-game character in its upcoming update, scheduled to be released in mid-October. Ovechkin was created to be four different commander characters.
On Tuesday, Wargaming Saint Petersburg, the makers of the game, released a commercial promoting Ovechkin’s association with the game. I promise it’s going to make you want to run through several walls.
According to a release, Ovechkin filmed the commercial in South Florida while awaiting the birth of his son Sergei. But not everything went as planned during the shoot.
“Everything was perfect but one little problem with the fog machine. It kept setting off the smoke detector. In the end, we just covered it up with a cup,” a laughing Ovechkin said. “I wanted people to understand that in any competitive field, you must inspire players to never give up. Video games are just like sport—play more, train more. When I started the game for the first time, I realized I am not a very good ship commander…. But, like on the ice, I will continue to play and build my game skills until I am the best!”
Playing the game will be worth it just to see Commander Ovechkin in action. Ovechkin voiced the characters and I’m a fan of his spiffy war uniforms.
According to the press release, these four commanders are “one that can serve with the US fleet, one for Soviet vessels and two unique ones. These two extra special commanders will be dual-nation, a first for World of Warships, meaning players can easily switch between Soviet and US fleets with a single commander.”
One of the Ovechkin characters even comes with a warship that has an ice rink built on top of its deck.
Ovechkin, a Fortnite addict, previously promoted the game Throne: Kingdom at War in November 2016.
