Sergei Shumakov will wear number 17 with the Capitals

The Capitals latest and likely final signee of the offseason officially has a number.

According to NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti, 26-year-old Russian forward Sergei Shumakov will wear number 17.

Other number news includes Michael Sgarbossa (14), Jayson Megna (15), and Nic Dowd (26).

Shumakov previously wore Braden Holtby’s number 70 when he played with CSKA.

The last Capital to wear number 17 was Aaron Volpatti during the 2014-15 season. Other big names to wear the big one seven in Washington include Mike Ridley (1987-94), Sergei Gonchar (1995), Chris Simon (1996-02), Chris Clark (2005-10), DJ King (2010-12), Wojtek Wolski (2012-13), and trade deadline acquisition Dustin “DJ Pendemic” Penner (2013-14).

According to a recent Sport Express article, Shumakov is prepared to start the season in the AHL if necessary. Shumakov’s agent also revealed that Caps management consulted with Alex Ovechkin before signing the KHL star.
