Happy Canada Day. Starting today, NHL free agents can sign a deal with anyone who will have them. Among them is John Tavares, the golden goose of free agency, who may or may not tell us where he’ll play.
But there will be so much more. It’s going to be pandemonium, and we’re going to rubberneck it all from here.
We expect the Washington Capitals to be quiet. Their top-nine forwards and top-four defensemen are all signed or restricted, and their goalie depth chart is, as the kids say, thicc. This is very good news, as free agency is when totally harebrained deals get signed, so we get to laugh at them.
