Gina Carlson posts emotional message on Instagram after John Carlson re-signs with Capitals

Sunday evening John Carlson inked an eight-year contract extension to stay with the only team he’s ever known. Hours later, his wife Gina posted a touching tribute to the Capitals and Washington, DC on her Instagram.

In her caption, Gina touches on meeting John in the city seven years ago. She also mentioned that the couple secretly bought land in the DC-area a few months ago to build their dream home.

For the last year, I convinced myself home would be wherever I was with my boys. In truth, home started 7 years ago, a scorching hot summer night when I met John here in dc. This city, and this team brought us together. Home is where, thankfully, he decided to live in the offseason. Home is where I spent 9 months after we met, flipping through channels before I went to bed, stopping at the CAPS game to check in on this cute guy named John Carlson who I met over the summer. Home is where we danced all night at wmzq fest 6 years ago & fell in love. Home is where we got married almost 4 years ago and 9 months later brought our sweet Lucca into this world. Home is where our sweet Rudy was born right in the middle of the playoffs, the playoffs that ended with a Stanley cup(: Home is where my husband was away in playoffs, & I got the scariest phone call of my life & my mom was at my door two minutes later to be here for me when John couldn’t be. Home is where (a few months ago) we secretly hoped we’d be staying in dc & bought land to build the southern home & big front porch we’ve always dreamed of having together. I am thankful for this organization drafting him 10 years ago & believing in him. My family is everything to me & to say I’m ecstatic to be here for another 8 years, is an understatement. I’m incredibly grateful for this ride we’ve been on with the capitals and completely filled with JOY to stay on it. my heart is so full to be able to stay close to my family & friends here in dc, & my husbands family close by in NJ! I am so happy & can speak for my husband that he couldn’t be happier to stay with his teammates & this organization❤️

While sweet, the message suggests the Carlsons strongly preferred staying with the Capitals (if they got a reasonable deal) and the couple’s ties to the area heavily factored into the decision to stay.

Gina grew up in the DC area and her family still lives close by.
