The Capitals were supposed to pick last in the sixth round, but made a trade to move up and take a player they really liked.
After dealing pick number 186 and a sixth round pick in 2019 to the Vancouver Canucks, the Capitals selected defenseman Alex Kannok-Leipert at pick number 161.

Kannok-Leipert has spent the last two years with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League where he tallied 24 points in 68 games. The Caps have now selected three players from the WHL in this draft.
