Humangous-big universe lover Ilya Bryzgalov covered Games One and Two of the Stanley Cup Final for the Players’ Tribune. Bryz was funny in that weird Bryz way where you’re not really sure what’s happening, but you never quite want it to stop either.
Bryz caught up with Capitals Russians Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov in the locker room.
First, he tried to talk to Ovechkin.
“Ovi, are you going to be able to answer a couple questions,” Bryzgalov said.
“No,” Ovi responded.
Bryzgalov then chatted up Kuzy and asked about his bird walk celly.
Ilya Bryzgalov: “Okay, first of all, Kuzya, tell me about your famous celebration because basically people ask me on Twitter, begging on their knees literally, you know, like, ask me, ‘Why you pick the chicken for the celebration?’”
[Kuzy laughs.]
Evgeny Kuznetsov: “That’s not a chicken.”
[Kuzy laughs some more.]
Evgeny Kuznetsov: “I don’t know. That’s a long story, and uh, one day I’ll explain.”
Ilya Bryzgalov: “It’s not a chicken, what is it?”
Evgeny Kuznetsov: “It’s a bird.”
Ilya Bryzgalov: “Bird?”
Evgeny Kuznetsov: “Yeah.”
Ilya Bryzgalov: “Eagle?”
Evgeny Kuznetsov: “Uh no, just a bird. Pigeon.”
[Kuzy laughs again.]
Ilya Bryzgalov: “Pigeon! Oh, now I see where you’re going.”
[More laughing.]
Ilya Bryzgalov: “You send a message to someone?”
Evgeny Kuznetsov: “Yeah, iMessage.”
[More laughing.]
Bryzgalov also had sympathy for third-string goaltender Pheonix Copley.
There’s also a funny bit between Bryzgalov and a fan that had rooted previously for the Arizona Coyotes and Anaheim Ducks before getting on the Vegas Golden Knights bandwagon. He had never heard of Bryz.
Never forget.
