Late in the second period when Andre Burakovsky gave the Caps a 3-0 lead, the team’s captain Alex Ovechkin began a celebration that would continue off and on throughout the third period of Game Seven.
Riding two goals from Burky and a second consecutive shutout from Braden Holtby, the Capitals eliminated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-0. The team is now going to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in the Ovechkin Era.
The Great 8’s happiness was palpable.
Ovechkin first started losing his mind after Burky’s breakaway goal. Ovechkin pointed at the Swedish forward as if to say YOU DID THIS MY SON as he started skating towards the bench.
Late in the third period, the celebration went into overdrive after Nicklas Backstrom scored an empty-net goal to make it 4-0. Ovechkin jumped up on the bench, pumping his fists into the air.
The Russian machine hugged Tom Wilson.
He hugged him again along with Andre Burakovsky. Check out Burkie’s face. Hahaha.
Ovi let out a loud, cathartic WOOOO!
There were even more WOOOs.
It was just a very good night for the Russian machine, as we’ll continue to document.
You can’t help but feel good for the guy. After being a punching bag for national media and being the main point of blame for the team’s playoff failure, Ovechkin will now have an opportunity to get his name on the Cup for the first time in 13 seasons.
