Numb: numbers for the morning after

There are only so many words to describe the Caps failing in the postseason and I feel like they’ve all been written before by much more eloquent humans. Due to that, I’ll take a pass on trying my hand at it again and just give you one word and that word is numb.

The Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Washington Capitals 5-4 in OT and take a 2-0 series lead. The two teams are now headed to Columbus for the next two games in the series.

The Capitals outshot the Blue Jackets 58 to 30 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 66 to 39.

    • The Capitals become just the 6th team in NHL history to lose in overtime of both Games One and Two of a best-of-seven series at home. All five of the previous teams went on to predictably lose the series.
    • Alex Ovechkin was great in this game. He had 17 individual shot attempts, scored two goals, and will still get the most criticism on the team when this whole deal is over.
    • Philipp Grubauer has been utterly terrible. He looks like Vesa Toskala right now. Grubi stopped 40 of the 48 shots the Blooj sent his way in this series and is likely not going to see another game in the playoffs.
    • Jakub Vrana, Shane Gersich, and Christian Djoos played 0 minutes of this game. They’d have all probably played more than 12 minutes if they were on the Penguins who value speed and offensive ability. I wonder how those pesky Guins are doing this year, the year before, and the year before that.
    • The Capitals have played 69 one-goal games in the playoffs in the Ovechkin-era. That’s nice. It’s also horrifying.

Trotz on healthy scratch Vrana: I think he's got a lot of great tools, but there's still a long way for him to go.
wait crap nevermind that was Trotz in 2013 about Filip Forsberg, who has 2 goals in 2 games this postseason
sorry our bad, should of double checked

    • Filip Forsberg, less than a year after the above quote, would start his 20-year old season in the NHL and rack up 63 regular season points and go for a point a game in six playoff games.

    Numbers thanks to Hockey-reference.com, Hockeystats.ca, NaturalStatTrick.com, and Corsica.hockey.
