    Late Collapse: Caps lose 4-3

The Preds visited DC on Thursday night for the Caps’ 81st game of the season.

Craig Smith scored a PP goal less than five minutes in to put Nashville ahead.

Alex Ovechkin scored from the Alex Ovechkin spot to tie the game in the second. A few minutes later, Evgeny Kuznetsov scored on the PP to give the good guys a 2-1 lead. Craig Smith scored again in the second to tie this baby up.

Evgeny Kuznetsov did ridiculous Evgeny Kuznetsov things to give the Caps a 3-2 lead in the third. But Roman Josi tied it on the PP. Ryan Johansen gave the Preds a lead late in the third.

    Caps lose 4-3.

    • The effort is appreciated, but Andre Burakovsky really does not need to be blocking shots in game 81 of the regular season with the division wrapped up. Jeez.
    • Wow, Nashville sure does pressure the man with the puck when they are on the PK. Not sure I’ve seen a PK that aggressive this season.
    • They paid for being aggressive on the Caps first goal. They shaded the puck carrier so heavily that Alex Ovechkin was left with way too much time to bury his 47th.
    • A full review of the first ten minutes: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
    • Things that makes you go hmmmmmm:

Trotz on DSP today: “I think he’s a playoff-type of guy for us.” He’s been experimenting with DSP on Eller’s line, but Smith-Pelly doesn’t have a point since Feb. 11. Eller doesn’t have a point since Smith-Pelly started playing with him.

    • If you missed the first three minutes of the second period, you missed about 72 whistles.
    • Evgeny Kuznetsov scoring on an attempted pass is the most Kuznetsov thing ever.
    • How about that second Kuzy goal? Goodness. Nothing the Preds or any NHL team can do to defend that.
    • Adam Jones hit a home run to give the O’s a 2-1 lead.
    • I tweeted some stuff from the RMNB account about the O’s game tonight and some people got hella confused. There’s more where that came from.
    • Puck off the netting should be live. Disagree? Sorry that you hate fun.
    • At times, Matt Niskanen hasn’t looked like himself this season. Tonight was not one of those nights. I thought he looked sharp defensively. But oops, that third period penalty sure was ill-timed.
    • Brooks Orpik looked solid defensively tonight but don’t tell all the people who think we’re Orpik haters that we said that.
    • There are so many times since DSP started skating with Lars Eller that the latter gives the puck to the former and the play just…falls apart. More Jake Vrana, please.
    • Philipp Grubauer was sensational in the third period. He had at least three highlight-reel stops. It wasn’t enough.
