Two huge high school hockey fans just went viral for a successful promposal which included a reference to the Caps and Penguins.
Phillip asked Megan to prom with a campy poster that read “taking you to prom would be like the Caps beating the Pens in the second round… unbelievable.”
The quip perfectly captures the Capitals postseason failure against the Penguins over the last several decades. According to Wikipedia, the Capitals have lost nine of ten playoff series against the Penguins. Pittsburgh has beaten Washington in the second round the last two seasons on their way to back-to-back Stanley Cups.
The Instagram account Spittin’ Chiclets posted the photo on Wednesday. Since then, the post has gotten nearly 36 thousand likes. Meanwhile the Twitter account @SidneyCrosbyEgo posted the photo and received nearly 2 thousand interactions on Twitter.

I reached out to Megan on Twitter. The two hockey fans are located in the Sunshine State.
“We are in Florida! Phillip is a huge Caps fan, and I’m a diehard Pens fan,” Megan wrote. “My mom grew up in Pittsburgh so I’ve been watching them since I was born. It’s been a joke between us for a while so when he surprised me with the sign, I just started laughing and said, ‘Yeah right!'”
Megan and Phillip, who have been dating for almost a year, are both seniors at Steinbrenner High School.
“Phillip plays on a travel hockey team and is playing junior hockey next year in Boston,” Megan said. “As you can imagine, his life revolves around hockey so the promposal was right on!”
Sunday, the Capitals and Penguins renew their rivalry at PPG Paints Arena. Washington leads Pittsburgh by five points in the Metropolitan Division standings with only four games remaining.
“The Caps/Pens divide is real between us – we always rub it in when our team beats the other,” she said.
Now, it’ll be up to the two teams to decide which senior gets bragging rights headed into the new school week.
