Brilliant in Brooklyn: Caps win 7-3

Hockey in Brooklyn! We’ve got ourselves a Metro division bout on this Thursday night.

Brock Nelson bought his own acre of land in front of the Caps net and promptly put the home team up 1-0 early. Later in the first, Lars Eller took a pass from Jakub Vrana and deposited it into the Isles net to tie it up. A little later in the period, Andre Burakovsky fed TJ Oshie who scored his first five-on-five goal since The Who released Tommy. But, shortly thereafter, the Isles tied it up at two on a goal from Andrew Ladd. The scoring in the first wasn’t done, as Dmitry Orlov put the Caps up 3-2 with just over two minutes to go.

Early in the second, Andre Burakovsky tipped home a point shot to put the good guys up 4-2. About halfway through the period, the Isles took a dumb penalty because Tom Wilson is in their head and Nick Backstrom scored on the ensuing power play.

In the third, Alex Ovechkin found John Carlson who then put the cherry on top. The Isles scored a late one but this one was already in the bag so whatever. Trent Junior Oshie added an empty-net goal.

    Caps win 7-3!

    • The Isles were apparently mad early in the game because Tom Wilson accidentally leveled an unsuspecting Casey Cizikas. I didn’t see anything cynical in the hit, looks like two dudes who didn’t see each other until the last second and, well Wilson is a big dude.
    • Speaking of Wilson, could he be anymore in the Isles head? Thanks so much for the fifth goal, Cal Clutterbuck. Feel free to continue to act tough when there’s an official between you and the guy you’re jawing at and/or spearing in the jewels.
    • Sure was nice to see TJ Oshie get a goal. The dude hasn’t been able to buy a goal lately.
    • Did anyone else get a chuckle out of Andrew Ladd scoring right after Oshie?

So Oshie and Ladd both have goals. Interesting. Not the only thing they have in common…

    • Pssst, it’s their contracts and how progressively painful they are going to be for their respective teams in the coming seasons.
    • A very important poll was posted during this game. We value your feedback.

Is Dmitry Orlov the Caps best defenseman?

    — RMNB (@russianmachine) March 15, 2018

    • I mean, really, just imagine if Orlov got power play time…

Orlov’s goal was his ninth of season, single-season career high. All nine have come at 5v5, tying him for league lead among Dmen with Hedman, Subban, Werenski and Severson. #CapsIsles

    • Lars Eller already has a career high in points and tied his career high in goals tonight. I’ve got my theories that I’ll expand on at some point here on RMNB, but what do you think is fueling his uptick in production?
    • The MVP award, in any league, should go to the best player in the league. Any debate about the difference between most valuable and best is just some silly semantics stuff. The best player is the most valuable. Thanks for hearing me out on that.
    • I decided to cut back on coffee a few months ago and have gotten really into tea. I generally just buy basic tea bags at Wegman’s and places like that. Tea Heads, am I missing out on far better options?
    • Chandler Stephenson is fast and I’d really like to see him play with a couple linemates who can keep up with him. Jay Beagle has done some good things for the Caps over the last several seasons but the team is considerably worse when he’s on the ice this season, regardless of deployment.
    • That Burakovsky-Backstrom-Oshie sure was good, eh? Total domination and great production.
    • Can we got some Christian Djoos in the lineup on Friday, please?
    • It’s the third period and the Caps are doing their whole turtle thing…
    • Shoutout to the NYC Caps Crew who was in the house tonight! Justin’s beard game was on point.

A big two points! Go get another two on Friday!
