Jay Beagle is a faceoff specialist and right now he’s being really, really special in the dot.
According to the Capitals PR, Beagle has won 37 of his last 41 faceoffs – an incredible 90.24 percent success rate. Beagle won 13 out of 14 draws (92.9 percent) at the Stadium Series game. No NHL player (with at least 10 draws through March 6) has had a better faceoff percentage in a single game this season.
There’s more – much, much more. In regards to general NHL faceoff stats, Beagle ranks:
- Fourth in the NHL in face-off percentage among players with at least 700 face-offs (483 wins on 835 draws, 57.84 percent)
- Second among players with at least 300 defensive zone draws (297 wins on 499 face-offs, 59.51 percent)
- First among players with at least 200 shorthanded face-offs (109 wins on 205 draws, 53.17 percent).
Since the 2014-15 season, Beagle also ranks fifth among NHL players with at least 1,000 draws in face-off percentage (1,694 wins on 2,963 draws, 57.17 percent).
Beagle’s nifty defensive zone wins also come at crucial times. During the Capitals game against the Hurricanes in January, Beagle won an important D zone faceoff, and went on to score the game-winning goal with only 1.3 seconds left.
And lucky for us, he is even teaching his two sons his specialized skill.
The NHL needs to watch out because in two decades these Baby Beagles will also have draws on lockdown too.
