The Caps got back into action on Thursday night against the Devils in New Jersey.

Drew Stafford opened the scoring about eight minutes into the game with a breakaway goal. Just a few minutes later, Brett Connolly tied the game after TJ Oshie gamed his Corsi.

Early in the second, Andy Greene (of all people) put home a knuckling puck to put the home team back on top. Miles Wood got behind the snoozing Caps D off a draw and scored on a breakaway to make the game 3-1. Dmitry Orlov responded immediately with a mondo slapshot to bring the Caps back within one.

With less than five minutes left, Brett Connolly put home a sweet dish from Evgeny Kuznetsov to tie the game at three.

Taylor Hall did Taylor Hall things in overtime.

    Caps lose 4-3.

    • This game started with Devante Smith-Pelly on the first line. I’m hoping I can add a bullet point later in the game that he’s been taken off the first line.
    • Speaking of DSP, he sent an inaccurate pass to Dmitry Orlov that resulted in the Devils first goal. Good hustle by DSP to try to get back after the turnover, but the damage was already done.
    • Great job by TJ Oshie just getting the puck towards the net on the Caps first goal. Some people would call that gaming your Corsi.
    • XRP had a nice little rally since yesterday, eh?
    • A bad DSP pass started the attack that led to the Devils second goal. Let’s get him off the first line, mkay?
    • Good on the officials for giving Brian Boyle an instigator in his fight with Tom Wilson. Maybe if officials do that every time, it’ll cut down on guys having to fight to defend a clean hit.
    • More than halfway through the game, DSP is still on the top line.
    • Did the Orioles trade Manny Machado yet?
    • Miles Wood can skate. He burned Orlov on the Devils third goal.
    • The Caps were down 25-11 in shots through two. Not great, Bob. Say, why does a team coming off the bye play a team that is not coming off the bye?
    • The PP tonight: not very good! I really miss MJ90’s zone entries. He made it look so easy. Evgeny Kuznetsov does not make it look so easy.
    • Let’s talk about that Alex Chiasson penalty in the third

4th line player takes a penalty 200 feet from his own net with his team down 1 goal halfway through the third. Unrelated: what’s Burakovsky up to?

    • Five minutes left, down a goal, we’ve still got DSP taking shifts on the first line.
    • Was Jakub Vrana benched late in the third or hurt? Because, so help me, if we go from healthy scratch Andre Burakovsky to healthy scratch Vrana…
