A veteran of 14 years in the NHL, referee Wes McCauley has become a household name for the dramatics and humor he brings to his mic’d up calls.
On Tuesday, McCauley, like a wrestler soaking in his cheers during a promo, held New York Rangers fans in suspense as he waited to announce the ruling of a challenged goal.
Ducks commentators did not fully understand what was going on, thinking that McCauley was waiting for the commercial break to end. Meanwhile on the other feed, Rangers commentators knew better.
“Let’s see what this man thinks! Wes McCauley!!” they said.
The goal in question was from Rangers forward Michael Grabner. Late in the third period, Grabner seemingly put the puck in the Anaheim Ducks net.
McCauley originally called it a no goal, but the Rangers challenged the call.
Then came the dramatics and Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault could not stop giggling.
Last season, McCauley went viral with his “five minutes each FOR FIGHTING” call between the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins. In late November, McCauley had some untimely microphone problems while announcing the ruling of a goal review.
Keep these calls coming, McCauley. We love the personality. They make hockey better.
