The Salute To Troops segment began with Caps PA announcer Wes Johnson honoring Stanley’s family consisting of his wife Erin and the couple’s three adorable children Summer, Brooklyn, and Rylen. They all got custom Capitals jerseys as presents.
Wes Johnson: “Please welcome the family of Construction Mechanic Second Class James Stanley of the United States Navy. Construction Mechanic Stanley has been in the Navy for 8 eight years and is currently on a 14-month deployment on the Horn of Africa. He’s a lifelong DC sports fan and a huge Capitals fan. Since he’s currently overseas for the holidays, Construction Mechanic Stanley sent his family these Capitals jersey and has recorded a special video message for his family.
James Stanley: “Hey, Summer. Hey, Brooklyn. Hey, Rye. I love you, guys. I miss you guys so much. I can’t wait to come home and see you. Give you huge hugs. I wish I was home right now. I’m sorry I can’t be. I hope you guys enjoy the game. I love you, guys.”
Wes Johnson: “Thank you to… wait a minute. Hold on. Wait one second. What’s this? It looks like Slapshot has an extra gift for you.”
The Stanley family then began making their way over to a box wrapped as a giant oversized present.
“Here’s a little something extra special from your Washington Capitals,” Johnson said.
Out stepped Stanley, who was not actually still deployed, to surprise his family.
“Look who it is! It’s a holiday miracle,” Johnson said.
What a moment.
