After being a late scratch Saturday night against the Arizona Coyotes, Marcus Johansson returned from injury for the Devils Wednesday against the Vancouver Canucks.
He only lasted one shift in the game.
While digging in for a chipped puck, the former Capital lost his balance and went headfirst into the boards. Johansson’s neck appeared to compress awkwardly at the moment of impact, crumpling the Swedish forward to the ice in pain.
Here’s another look.
Johansson laid on the ice for about a minute before skating off slowly under his own power.
After missing the rest of the first period and all of the second period, the Devils announced Johansson would not return due to an “upper body” injury.

The Devils would go on to win 2-0.
Practice pays off, Drew Stafford empty netter with 14.1 seconds left and it's 2-0 Devils. They'll improve to 9-2-0 and 5-0-0 on the road.

Johansson’s luck lately has been terrible. According to Chris Ryan of NJ.com, Johansson was scratched Saturday after experiencing “bizarre pain and a lack of power.”
“I just got out and I couldn’t skate, couldn’t push off,” Johansson said to Ryan. “I don’t know. Never felt that before, but it was pretty strange, pretty painful at the moment and mostly I had no power. Couldn’t do anything.
“Didn’t feel right playing one or two shifts then leave the other guys hanging,” Johansson continued. “I think it’s a good thing I didn’t go because it feels a lot better already.”
On Monday, Johansson returned to practice and got himself healthy enough to play on Wednesday… only to be injured again.
