Friday, the Washington Capitals were in Edmonton ahead of their game with the Oilers Saturday night.
That afternoon, an Edmonton restaurant called The Sequel Cafe tweeted that Alex Ovechkin gave a winter jacket and hat to a homeless man he passed on the street. While the Washington Capitals or Ovechkin’s agent did not return messages confirming the random act of kindness, Ovechkin did so himself in a text message exchange with his wife.
Nastya Ovechkina published a screenshot of their text conversation on Instagram.

Via a translation by RMNB’s Graham Dumas, here’s what the couple’s Russian language conversation says.
Alex Ovechkin: “Sweetie, I just bought a bum a hat, sweater, and a warm coat.”
Nastya Ovechkina: “A bum?”
Alex Ovechkin: “Yeah, it’s really cold here. And he didn’t have any clothing. I felt really sorry for him.”
Nastya Ovechkina: “Good job.”
So according to Ovechkin, he actually went out of his way to buy a hat, sweater, and coat for the homeless man.
Nastya added a caption overtop the screenshot that says “What I value in my husband, @aleksandrovechkinofficial.”
Us too.
