Nathan Walker became the first Australian to ever play in the NHL Saturday. And just to make his debut perfect, he scored his first NHL goal late in the second period in front of his family and friends.
The goal was initially credited to Devante Smith-Pelly, but NHL officials eventually reviewed footage and switched the goal to Walker.
After the game, Walker posed with the puck that he almost didn’t end up with.

After the Caps celebrated their sixth goal of the game, Walker informed Smith-Pelly that the puck may have touched him.
DSP said Walker told him during celebration after the goal that puck may have touched him, so he asked for puck. Oshie got it first.

Smith-Pelly immediately waved down an official down to get the milestone puck.
TJ Oshie ended up with it first.
While everyone in the arena and at home though DSP scored, the fourth line knew better. DSP gave Walker a head pat as the Aussie let out a huge smile.
A historic night capped by a historic goal.
