The Capitals will make history during their 2017-18 home opener against the Montreal Canadians on Saturday, becoming the first team in NHL history to ice an Australian player in forward Nathan Walker. If one Caps fan gets his way, Walker’s debut will be marked by another apparent first.
Occasional RMNB contributor Ben Scarbro has put together a petition asking the NHL to play the Australian national anthem the night of his debut in honor of the milestone.
The petition is very official:
WHEREAS on Saturday, October 7, 2017, the Washington Capitals will play in the opening home match of their 2017-2018 National Hockey League season at the Capital One Arena; and
WHEREAS Capitals forward Nathan Walker is a citizen of the Commonwealth of Australia; and
WHEREAS the aforementioned Walker will become the first Australian national to play in a regular-season NHL game; and
WHEREAS SGM Robert McDonald, the region’s preeminent performer of national anthems of the United States and Canada for Washington, D.C.-based professional sporting events, is capable of performing literally any song every written with minimal preparation time;
WE THE UNDERSIGNED HEREBY PETITION the Washington Capitals and the National Hockey League to honor the momentous and historic occasion of Nathan Walker’s NHL debut with the singing of the U.S., Canadian and Australian national anthems prior to the match between the Washington Capitals and the Montreal Canadians.
WE HEREBY IMPLORE the Washington Capitals — including majority owner Ted Leonsis, general manager Brian MacLellan, director of game entertainment Tyler Hines, and any and all other interested and responsible parties — to take all necessary steps to alleviate TV rights, scheduling or other such complications as may otherwise prevent such a demonstration from occurring.
“Advance Australia Fair” was, according to Wikipedia, composed by a Scot name Peter Dodds McCormick. Musically it’s pretty standard far, with horns and lots of cymbal crashes. But lyrically it shines with multiple mentions of “toiling” (presumably to really sell the country to outsiders), and the A+ line that “our home is girt by sea.”
You can sign the petition online.
