As Houston begins to recover from the destruction of Hurricane Harvey, many pets are seeking shelter.
Many of the Texas area refugee shelters available did not allow pets, and to escape the severe flooding, owners had no other option than to leave them behind. It’s hard to imagine the pain these families felt having to make this decision.
There are many ways to help Houston and a new one just appeared. The DC Human Rescue Alliance needs to clear their shelter to make room for the transfer of shelter pets from Texas. Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer and his wife, Erica, are making this easier. They are offering to cover all adoption feeds from Thursday through Sunday this week.
The Human Rescue Alliance is urging the people of the DC Metro area to adopt the more than 100 pets currently sheltered to make room for incoming animals.
“We have about 20 coming now, but we have been told that we should expect for that number to increase, especially cats, we expect a lot more cats,” Humane Rescue Alliance Chief Operating Officer Stephanie Shain told Fox 5 News. “So we are reminding people thinking about adopting to come on down.”
Adoption fees can range from $85 to $200 depending on the animal, but the Scherzer’s will cover any fee through the next four days. “They know how important it is we get these kennels empty,” Shain said.

The situation in Texas is devastating & absolutely heartbreaking. If you are able to donate please do. One way to do so is by texting love to 20222 which will send a $10 donation to the Humane Society. @dallasdogrrr is working around the clock to rescue these poor animals. You can either donate through their website dallasdogrrr.org or purchase needed items through their Amazon wishlist (link in my bio). If you are anywhere near the area and can provide a boat for rescue, air conditioned warehouse for shelter or a helping hand in anyway please do so. If nothing else please keep all the people & animals in your prayers🙏🏼💔🙏🏼
