Karl Alzner was in the Capitals organization for a decade. The sturdy defenseman won two Calder Cups with the Hershey Bears, owns the Capitals all-time consecutive games streak, and was a member of all three of the Capitals Presidents’ Trophy-winning teams.
That’s why it’s totally bizarre to see the following photo. The Montreal Canadiens team store at Bell Center is already selling Alzner jersey t-shirts and… wait, what? He’s wearing number twenty-two?? This is just wrong on so many levels.

My mind cannot comprehend what it’s seeing.
Alzner could not wear his normal number because Alex Galchenyuk wears number twenty-seven.
The shirts are being sold for $34.99 CAD at the team store, which is $27.85 in American dollars. Ah, finally a 27 to give me back my bearings.
This continues what should be a pretty weird next few months as several members of last year’s team get acclimated with their new franchises. Marcus Johansson recently posted a photo of his new Devils gear while Kevin Shattenkirk threw on a New York Rangers jersey for the first time. Meanwhile photos of Vegas Golden Knight Nate Schmidt and Carolina Hurricane Justin Williams with their new teams are still to come.
Somebody hold me.
