Auston Matthews had an incredible rookie season and now has a brand new ink job to cap off his year. Monday, Matthews added a very realistic, crowned lion tattoo on his right arm.
Matthews, an Arizona native, paid a visit to Old Town Ink in Scottsdale on Monday. His tattoo artist, Bubba Irwin, was a contestant on Season Four of Spike’s Ink Master. Irwin specializes in realism and portraits, which is an accurate description given the design of the art he inked on Matthews.
An Auston Matthews fan account posted a video that shows the work soon after it was finished along with Matthews grinning at the end.

Matthews finished his rookie season with 69 (nice) points (40 goals, 29 assists) and his first career playoff berth. Before being drafted by the Leafs, Matthews played one professional season in the Swiss NLA’s ZSC Lions along with Capitals prospect Jonas Siegenthaler. The Lions went on to win the Swiss Cup that season, which could lead meaning towards his tattoo choice: a lion wearing a crown.
Bailey, the LA Kings lion mascot, seems to think otherwise.
Honored @AM34 got a tattoo of me on his arm. Don't tell Carlton 😉 pic.twitter.com/b6RnqkJIpy
