After leading his team to an unlikely tournament playoff berth on Tuesday, Washington Capitals backup goaltender Philipp Grubauer was back in net for Germany in their quarterfinals matchup against Canada.
Grubauer was a brick wall, making 48 saves. However, it wasn’t enough for the tournament’s host team to advance. Riding goals by Mark Scheifele and Jeff Skinner, Canada won 2-1.
Grubauer was named Germany’s player of the game.

Germany’s lone goal was scored shorthanded on a breakaway by Yannic Seidenberg.
German forward Patrick Reimer was full of praise for Grubauer after Germany came close to upsetting the tournament favorite.
“We had great goaltending by Gruby,” Reimer said to the IIHF. “It was our goal not to give up too much. He was giving us a chance to stay in the game. Then that late goal gave us momentum. Ehrhoff is one of our best d-men and played in the NHL for a long time and he had a good view with that pass to Yanic who finished and that gave us a boost and we thought we could tie up the game but it didn’t happen.”
The Germans received a standing ovation from the home crowd after the loss.
As for Grubauer, on social media, the hashtag #GrubMauer trended throughout the match. Mauer means wall in German.
