With the Capitals down 5-2 late in the third period, enforcer Tom Wilson looked to give his team energy and send a message to the Penguins.
Instead Wilson would be sent to the showers early.
With nine minutes and twenty-two seconds left in the third, Nick Bonino skated the puck into the Capitals zone and tried to send a pass to Tom Kuhnhackl, skating hard to the net. Bonino’s pass, however, was deflected by Nate Schmidt, forcing Kuhnhackl to reach behind his body for the puck.
This was a mistake.
A hard-charging Tom Wilson leveled Kuhnhackl, striking the Penguins forward in the head and chest.
Behind the play, Bonino and Wilson pawed at each other before Willy Baby unleashed two left handed jabs at Bonino’s face.
That would be enough to get Wilson tossed. The Caps forward received a two-minute minor for roughing and a ten-minute misconduct, as officials tried to keep the game from getting out of hand.
