With two minutes and twenty-eight seconds remaining in the first period, Alex Ovechkin absorbed a painful leg-on-leg hit from Nazem Kadri. It took Ovechkin nearly two minutes to get up and when the Russian superstar did, he needed help from two teammates to get back to the bench. Many fans wondered if the injury was season-ending or career-threatening. What on earth was going on behind closed doors?
According to Alex Ovechkin, he was drinking a soda.
“I was watching TV,” Ovechkin said to the media after the game. “Just have a Coke and enjoy the match.”
Ovechkin watched from the locker room as TJ Oshie scored to put the Caps up 1-0.
Asked if he was feeling any pain after the game, Ovechkin seemed appalled by the question.
“All good,” Ovechkin said. “No worry.”
Ovechkin’s love for Coca-Cola is well documented.
When Ovechkin first arrived in Washington, he would regularly be seen drinking Cokes at the bench.
He continued that tradition while playing on the Russian National Team.
We learned later in his career that Ovi downed three Cokes before each game.
Before the Sochi Winter Olympics, Ovechkin inked an endorsement deal with Coke and his likeness was plastered over soda machines.
Ovechkin has multiple Coke machines strewn about his house.
