Penguins captain Sidney Crosby scored one goal and had the primary assist on two more in his team’s 4-1 drubbing of the Blue Jackets on Saturday night. Behind 2-0 in the series, Columbus prepares to host Pittsburgh for Game Three on Sunday. The Blue Jackets’ local paper, the Columbus Dispatch, had prepared a fun, fun promotion for the event, but on second thought, nope, actually that was a terrible idea.
So the Dispatch is no longer doing the whole Crying Sidney Crosby mask thing.
The Dispatch’s excellent beat writer for the Jackets, Aaron Portzline, told us so on Saturday morning.
The Dispatch has canceled plans to distribute Sidney Crosby "crying" masks in Sunday's paper. #CBJ #Pens @DispatchAlerts

A historical parallel: In 2012, the Caps hosted the Boston Bruins in Verizon Center. RMNB and other fans distributed Barack Obama masks and signs to rib Bruins goalie Tim Thomas for his political views. The Bruins won that game. The masks and signs (probably) didn’t make the Caps lose, but it was a little embarrassing in retrospect — or would have been if RMNB were capable of being embarrassed.
Today, Sidney Crosby is the Rocket Richard winner, playing some of the best offense in his career and showing a resoluteness that some doubted he had half a decade ago. Crosby is still a complete freaking prick on the ice, but coupled with his peerless skill his prick-ness becomes a virtue — even if it is grating for fans of his opponents.
If Crosby weren’t the league’s best scorer right now, and if his team weren’t leading 2-0, and if the Blue Jackets hadn’t shamed themselves with Matt Calvert’s despicable (and quintessentially Tortoreptillian) behavior at the game’s end, then maybe this would have been a good idea. But he is and they are and they did, so it’s not.
The Dispatch’s revised decision is a victory in the war against being totally freaking oblivious — and maybe also a dent in the armor of toxic masculinity, because, by the way, crying is okay.
RMNB is not associated with the Washington Capitals; Monumental Sports, the NHL, or its properties. Not even a little bit.
