Good morning, hockey fans. If you stayed awake into the wee hours of Friday, you got to watch a fast-paced, evenly matched game between two good teams. It would have been even nicer if the Caps had won. Or if you didn’t have work in like 5 hours.
Daniel Winnik started the scoring with a nifty assist by Beagle, but Thornton struck back not long after. The second period saw goals by Pavelski and Connolly, but a pair of power-play goals by Couture before and after the second intermission gave the Sharks enough margin for the win.
Sharks beat Caps 4-2. The Caps never win in San Jose. It is written.
- Brooks Orpik jabbed his stick into the eye of Sharks center Melker Karlsson, earning a double minor. The Caps capably killed it off, but surrendered a goal to Pavelski the moment Orpik left the box. Otherwise, Orpik was great at 5-on-5, as per usual this season.
- Later in the second period and early in the third, the PK failed in earnest, giving up goals to Logan Couture on both accounts.
- A rough nice for Washington’s special teams. They went 0-for-5 on the power play.
- Jay Beagle was everywhere, for good or ill. His assist on Daniel Winnik’s goal was terrific. Beagle was on ice for the next goal, then a penalty. After that he stabilized; he was not on ice for either of Couture’s PPGs.
- If Kevin Shattenkirk got hand tattoos, I’m not sure I could tell the difference between him and Mike Green. Shat fits in great already — his blistering assist on Brett Connolly’s goal as compelling proof. That’s assists in three straight, and how about this hip check?!

- Iron man Karl Alzner looks to me like he could use a night off. If this is him in peak conditioning, that’s deeply worrying. The Sharks are pretty fast, and they left Alzner in the dust a few times.
- What’s the deal with pucks straight-up hunting for Barry Trotz this season?
- The final bullet is dedicated to Alex Ovechkin‘s accomplishments in this game:

Joe B suit of the night
