Last night, I attended my first Capitals game since 2014 with my eight-months-pregnant wife Ashley. It was very meaningful to me because it also ended up being my baby’s first game ever too. I wish all of you could have seen it kick my wife’s belly after Tom Wilson scored and the goal horn went off!
I only meant for the two of us to go to the game as fans (we bought tickets), but when the Capitals PR team found out, they insisted on credentialing us to give us both access upstairs. They also encouraged both Ashley and myself to visit before the game.
And that’s when something incredible happened.
We were handed a present. I let Ashley open it. It was our baby’s first Capitals jersey.
The Caps PR team prefers to stay in the background because they want the focus to be on the team and the players. And I respect and understand that. But for this story, I just can’t.
I want to thank, from the very bottom of my heart, Megan Eichenberg, Sergey Kocharov, and Pace “James” Sagester for doing this. It’s one thing to be nice to our blog (which is also like my baby), but it’s another thing entirely to actually take time out of your day to do that for my future kid. [I am literally tearing up while writing this.]
While I’m considered a media person, I will always be a fan of the Capitals first. And I hope my baby loves hockey someday as much as I do.
I know the perfect team it can root for.
