Nicklas Backstrom given golden stick, video tribute for his 500th assist (Video)

The Washington Capitals held a pregame ceremony to honor Nicklas Backstrom on his 500th assist. We at home didn’t get to see the proceedings, but we did get this neat video from the team, full of Nicky’s teammates congratulating him on the feat.

“Everybody knows you’re good,” Alex Ovechkin said in his clip. “But I’m pretty sure I know more than anybody how good you are.”

The team presented Backstrom with a golden stick to recognize the milestone.

Backstrom waved to the roaring crowd.

The Caps assist leader then shook hands with Owner Ted Leonsis and Team President Dick Patrick. Backstrom was joined on the ice by his partner Liza and his two children, Haley and Vince.

Backstrom held five-month-old Vince for the team’s picture.

Leonsis, who wrote a tribute for Backstrom earlier in the week, also managed to snap a few sweet photos.

Meanwhile, and importantly, the Philadelphia Flyers tapped their sticks to congratulate Nick. This is important for obvious reasons that we’re not at all trolling about.

What a great ceremony.
