Friday night before the opening face-off, Ted Leonsis was greeting Capitals fans outside his Owner’s Box. After meeting one particularly charming young gentleman, Leonsis gave the tot’s entire family four lower bowl tickets. The family was originally set to sit three rows from the very top of Verizon Center.
Daniel Lerman explains:
I was making my way to the escalators just before the Blackhawks game when I turned around and saw Ted Leonsis greeting fans by the entrance. I asked if he’d take a picture with my 5-year-old son, and after doing so he asked where our seats were. I showed him my tickets–Section 429, Row O. He asked if it was just the two of us, and when I said yes he handed me two tickets for Section 109!
After I thanked him profusely, and just as he was turning away, I remembered something: I forgot that I brought my other son to the game too–he had gone up ahead to our seats. I sheepishly told Ted, who just handed me another set of two tickets and said to just take them all. As luck would have it, our seats provided a great view of five of the Caps’ goals in their blowout. Thanks to Ted for making a regular-season game a night to remember!
The Caps would shutout the Blackhawks 6-0, extending their winning streak to eight games.
While every team’s owner can be a lightning rod of criticism for fans, it’s hard for me to imagine another owner in sports doing something quite like this. And I would bet, Ted probably does this every game – we just don’t hear about it.

Way to go, Ted.
