The Caps went down to Raleigh and extended their winning streak to six games with a 4-3 win over the Hurricanes. The Caps now hold a 19-7-3 record and their +16 goal differential, while only good for fourth in the Metro, is sixth in the NHL.
Here are some numbers from the win.
The Caps won the 5-on-5 shot attempt battle 42-37, thanks to a really strong second half of the game. Once adjusting for score, the shot attempts were 42-38, still in favor of the Caps. So, the tight score just about entirely nullified score effects in the game. Here are some more numbers, all at 5-on-5 unless otherwise noted:
- Jakub Vrana led the Caps with a +11 on-ice shot attempt differential.
- The entire third line had a strong showing, as Brett Connolly (+10) and Lars Eller (+8) were second and third in this category.
- TJ Oshie brought up the rear in on-ice shot attempt differential at -4.
- Matt Niskanen and Dmitry Orlov were both on the ice for 17 Caps shot attempts, tops on the team.
- The Caps allowed just 2 shot attempts when Brett Connolly was on the ice, the fewest among all Caps skaters.
- Evgeny Kuznetosv was on the ice for the most scoring chances for the Caps (seven).
- Niskanen was on the ice for the most scoring chances for the Canes (11).
- Niskanen led the team in individual shot attempts with six, one more than Alex Ovechkin.
