The Capitals announced the first large group of cuts to the training camp roster on Thursday. The cut players will report back to their junior hockey teams, to AHL camp in Hershey, or if they were on a professional tryout they will just be released.

The group heading back to their junior hockey teams is headed by the Capitals’ most recent first round draft pick, defenseman Lucas Johansen, and recently boarded defenseman Connor Hobbs. The full list of names:

And players sent back to junior hockey clubs: Hobbs, Johansen, Malenstyn, Pilon and Zaitsev

The group heading to Hershey for AHL training camp includes AHL veteran Chris Bourque, his brother Ryan Bourque, and Dustin Gazley. The full list of names heading to Hershey:

Leach, Parker and C. Williams (2/2)

And finally the group that was in camp on PTO’s:

The following players were released from PTO: DeSalvo, LaPorte, McParland, Pitt and J. Williams

Notable names still on the roster include Travis Boyd, Riley Barber, Zach Sanford, Chandler Stephenson, and Jakub Vrana, who should all be competing for the final forward roster spot.

Once Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer return from the World Cup of Hockey, we should also expect two more goaltender cuts.
