Braden Holtby hasn’t played or dressed in a single game for Team Canada during group play of the World Cup of Hockey. Tuesday night, however, the Holtbeast made a huge impact from the stands.

Holtby hung out with Tragically Hip lead singer Gord Downie in the press box. Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in December.
In a sweet gesture, the Holtbeast had his Team Canada mask painted to include a tribute to the band. On the left side of the bucket, the Tragically Hip’s logo was overlaid inside Canada’s maple leaf logo along with several illustrations of the band. Holtby announced several weeks ago that he’d auction the mask off to charities of Downie’s choosing.
Tuesday night, the auction listing was made live and the proceeds will support two foundations, The Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where Downie has received treatment, and the Gord Downie Secret Path Fund for Truth and Reconciliation which supports a program to educate and preserve the historical significance of Canada’s abolished First Nations Residential Schools program.
