Caps fans boo mite on ice who says he’s a Penguins fan

Wednesday night, Verizon Center was host to the World Cup of Hockey pre-tournament game between Team Sweden and Team Europe. During the first intermission, local youth hockey players participated in their normal mites on ice game. After the game ended, one of the tiny players was named the Mite of the Night and interviewed over the PA System.

That’s where things went very wrong.

According to RMNB’s Elyse Bailey, the kid, who appeared to be no older than six-years-old, was asked by Adam Kelsey the usual questions like “did you hear everyone cheering for you?” and “you almost got a hat trick.” The child responded with one word answers. Then Kelsey asked the kid if he was excited about Caps hockey almost being back. The child passionately responded, “No.”

The next question is where things went completely off the rails. When asked who his favorite team was, the kid said “Penguins.” Most of the arena booed. The child seemed amused.

Part of me is proud of Caps fans for showing so much pride in their team and admonishing a hated rival. But then there’s the other part of me who is worried we just scarred this child for life. Where do you fall?

RMNB is not associated with the Washington Capitals; Monumental Sports, the NHLPA, the NHL, or its properties. Not even a little bit.
