Putting Jason Chimera’s $5,000 Fine in Perspective For Butt-Ending Shayne Gostisbehere

chimera2

Wednesday night in Philadelphia, Jason Chimera avenged a vicious slash to the stomach by butt-ending Shayne Gostisbehere in the midsection. Chimera was not penalized on the play. Gostisbehere was not injured either.

Thursday, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety got involved and announced that they were fining Chimera $5,000. It is the maximum fine under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

For those who feel like justice has been served, I’d like to put the fine in perspective.

Jason Chimera, who signed to a two-year $4 million contract extension, makes $2 mil per season. If you do some simple math and divide that by 82 (the amount of regular season games that NHL players are paid for), Chimera makes $24,390 per game. If we drill down even further, Chimera makes $8,130 per period and $406.50 per minute. So basically last night, Chimera played for free for a half period.

I’d call that a slap on the wrist, but even that seems too strong.
