Every team in the NHL knows what Alex Ovechkin is trying to do on the power play. They still can’t stop it.
During Sunday’s game against the Rangers, Ovechkin scored in his ninth-straight game against New York. This despite the Rangers having Ovi guarded perfectly.
After Dmitry Orlov made a beautiful backhanded keep-in, Evgeny Kuznetsov threw a cross-ice pass to Ovechkin. Rangers defenseman Dylan McIlrath, anticipating a one-timer, dropped to his knees to take away the shot. Ovechkin made a heads up play, pump-faking and then skating past McIlrath. When Ovechkin gained the slot, he sent a hard shot past Antti Raanta’s five hole.
It was a work of art.
That’s Ovechkin’s 502nd goal of his career. He’s now tied for 41st in NHL career goals. He’s tied with Joe Mullen. Next up is former Capital Peter Bondra with 503.
