On one end, Braden Holtby and Nate Schmidt combined to make a miracle stop to save the game. Then on the other, future hall of famer Alex Ovechkin scored on a brilliant individual play, skating past Rick Nash and shooting the puck through Henrik Lundqvist’s five-hole.
Caps win 4-3 in overtime. Alex Ovechkin scores career goal number 499 and his second goal of the game. It’s Ovi’s 5th game-winning goal of the season.
“Obviously a huge save by Holts,” Ovechkin said after the game.

“You know, I thought it’s over,” he continued. “Somehow [Holtby] stopped the puck. Then I just have the full speed, I saw Nash kind of wave to somebody to take their side. Then I use my speed to beat him one-on-one. Just make a move in the middle and put it in.”
He makes it sound so simple.
Ovi’s celebration was wild.
As he begins celebrating, Ovi falls to the ice and begins to spin.
And Ovi concludes it with this ugly, spinning celly. pic.twitter.com/1MkIyyB0FU

What a guy.
And to think, in the third period, Madison Square Garden erupted in a chant of “Ovi Sucks! Ovi Sucks!”
Alex #WHOAVECHKIN.
