Do-everything-right center Nicklas Backstrom did not return to the Caps-Sabres game in the third period due to an upper body injury. That’s really bad news, but it reunited Evgeny Kuznetsov with Alex Ovechkin and TJ Oshie on the first line.
The TKO Line scored on their first shift reunited together.
Look at this perfect forechecking and highlight reel passing. TJ Oshie throws the puck around the corner boards to Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov then throws a backhand pass to Ovechkin crashing the net. Ovechkin’s shot easily eludes goaltender Chad Johnson.
That’s Ovechkin’s 494th goal of his career and the 19th of the season.
TKO.
Update: Ovechkin also scored an empty-net goal to ice the game in the final minute.
