The Caps headed down to Sunrise on Thursday with their dads in attendance. Washington showed they learned well from their mentors by doing what old people normally do in Florida: nothing.

The game got off to a weird not-start, with puck drop being delayed nearly 20 minutes due to a lack of EMS folks in the area. When it finally got going, ya boy Jaromir Jagr put the Panthers on the board in the opening minute with a glorious deflection past Philipp Grubauer.

While the Caps offense lay dormant, Washington kept gifting Florida power play. On their fourth man advantage in under 30 minutes, the Panthers converted as Brandon Pirri unleashed a ballistic slap shot from the near circle.

Aaron Ekblad, Alex Ovechkin, and Logan Shaw added tallies in the third, but everyone had stopped caring at that point. Cats beat Caps 4-1.

    • Peter and Ian both ventured into the dangerous environs of the District of Columbia to go to some Downton Abbey thing. That left Pat, Nathan, Rachel, and I with our greasy fingers on the Beagle.jpg button. At least they didn’t have to watch that game.
    • Jaromir Jagr continues to age like something that gets better with age. I wouldn’t know what that is because I don’t consume pretentious crap. The 43-year-old tied Marcel Dionne for fourth on all-time goals list with his first period goal. The tally came 51 seconds into the game, the earliest the Caps have allowed a goal this season.
    • My mom’s thoughts on the goal: “Braden Holtby hadn’t even woken up yet.” In not-Braden Holtby’s defense, he had no chance. Overall, Grubauer, who was in net because Trotz wants everyone to play in front of their dad, was solid in his first start since November 19’s loss to Dallas.
    • Time for some mild positives. Chris Brown also got into the lineup because his papa was watching. He was pretty good in his first NHL game since November of last year.
    • Marcus Johansson, who is a total sissy according to some estimable people on Twitter, just missed scoring in the first period when he hit the post at the net mouth and also drew a penalty driving to the crease.
    • The Caps were able to spoil former Monaco Gran Prix winner Al Montoya‘s shutout, so that’s cool I guess.

@russianmachine yeah! They can come celebrate my bachelor party with me & my friends who all travelled for the game! pic.twitter.com/hjSSxrduZW

    • Congrats to Aaron on his impending nuptials, and condolences for wasting his bachelor party on this game. Hope they go out somewhere fun afterwards at least. If such a place exists in Sunrise, Florida.
    • Positives over.
    • The Caps had eight shots on goal at the halfway point.
    • Tom Wilson took a dumb penalty and got kicked out of the game.
    • Barry Trotz put Jay Beagle on the first line, which is just his way of saying ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
    • The Caps finished with 25 PIMs. Six power plays for Florida. Brutal. Refs weren’t great though.
    • I stole half these jokes.

It’s just one game. Forget about it.
