A little old lady almost paid the ultimate price for a show of bravado between Caps forwards Brooks Laich and Nicklas Backstrom when they raced each other up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial last month.

Let me set the scene: Earlier in November, some Caps fans bid on the opportunity to tour the nation’s capital with Caps players on Segways. That tour happened on November 22 when Laich, Backstrom, Andre Burakovsky, and Marcus Johansson set out to cause a ruckus while trying to avoid any career-threatening injuries.

At some point, the Segway tour took them to the famous monument. In a video released yesterday by Monumental Network, Backstrom appears to issue an impromptu race-to-the-top challenge, which Laich, of course, accepts. Moments later, Backstrom, of all people, can be seen almost hip-checking a little old lady right to her doom.

But Backstrom, being the caring Papa that he is, avoids the devastating hit at the last second, no doubt leaving the little old lady mumbling, “ya damn hooligans.” By the way, it appears Laich won the first leg of the footrace, but stops running at the first landing. Backstrom, being committed to finishing the job, continues toward the second flight of stairs but the video cuts out before a clear winner is shown.

Meanwhile, as the group of Caps sit at a stop light later, a driver challenges Andre Burakovsky to a drag race with his Segway. Burakovsky, of course, accepts and, of course, loses badly. The air humping here is priceless though.

So at least no one got injured right?
