Wait, What? Caps Beat Oilers 1-0!

    The cutest and best.

The Edmonton Oilers came to town on Monday. It was a pretty bad game, kinda like there was a very slow gas leak at ice level that affected only the guys in red sweaters.

    There was a first period.

And there was a second period.

And then in the third period, Dmitry Orlov unleashed a magical shot to pull a rabbit out of a hat. Caps beat Oilers 1-0.

    • Braden Holtby was called upon to make some fantastic saves when the D broke down. He deserved a win, an apology, or both. Edmonton’s shots, though, mostly came from the perimeter. Nevertheless, the Oilers controlled play throughout the game. At one point Edmonton were doubling up the Caps in shot attempts. Dima came to the rescue and Holts is still the league leader in wins. He got his first shutout of the season. The first of his career also came against the Oilers.

Last time these two teams met, they combined for 11 goals. They just need 11 to match that late in the second.

    • Yeah, those first two periods were baaaaaad.
    • Alex Ovechkin is a great player. Tonight, he was, again, baaaaaaad. He was mostly invisible and a black hole of possession with a minus-11 shot-attempt differential. He wasn’t on the ice for a single Capitals shot attempt in the first period. The rest of the first line was brutal too. Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie combined for one (1) shot on goal.
    • Tom Wilson got a penalty he didn’t deserve again. That’s what happens when you get a reputation. Calls like these would have been avoided if he didn’t have a history of doing silly things.
    • The fourth line of Wilson, Brooks Laich, and Michael Latta was baaaaaaad. They had one — 1 — shot attempt through two periods. The Oilers had 13 against the trio. At this point, Barry Trotz must be wondering if there’s a fifth line Wilson can be put him on.
    • Meanwhile, Backstrom totally deserved his four minute double minor for high sticking. He drew blood. It wasn’t intentional. That doesn’t matter. The Caps killed it off.

    • Time for positives!
    • Marcus Johansson‘s favorite food is Swedish meatballs. Ovechkin prefers Big Macs. Stan Galiev loves cobras.
    • Dmitry Orlov and Tyler [?] Chorney were the only good D-pair. Only fitting that Dima’s second goal in as many games won it.

Boring, bad game — until it wasn’t! That’s really all I got.
