For years, hockey fans have been begging for a hockey emoji. And on Wednesday, we finally got our wish. Unicode Consortium released a version of Unicode 8.0, which includes 37 new icons. The taco, burrito, cheese, and unicorn are awesome.
The hockey emoji – how can I put this delicately – kind of sucks.

The stick itself is really long and wonky, and the puck is tiny. You can hardly see it when it’s sized down, which is pretty much the only way it’ll be used.
A better substitute would be just a puck (like the other sports emoji that are only the ball) or a better full illustration. They could have had two crossed sticks with a puck or a little skating hockey player.
At this point though, we’ve been so desperate for a general hockey emoji that I guess we’ll take it.
The new 37 new icons won’t be available on your phones immediately. According to Mashable, Apple and those other companies that try to make good phones and tablets will include them only in their next software updates.
Gold star, Unicode. You tried, but could’ve done so much better.
