Last night, Alex Ovechkin was once again generous, giving away a bunch of pucks and his gear after the All-Star Skills Competition. We’re happy to report that the person who received Ovechin’s stick is actually a Caps fan.
Michael B., who goes by the nickname Moose, tells us that Ovechkin sought out him and his wife after the event.
I’ll let him explain.
My wife Annie and I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. We made the 90 minute drive up to Columbus on Saturday to check out the Fan Fair and attend the Skills Competition. We also make it to every Caps game when they are in town.
I like to take pics of my wife with sports mascots so our only mission on Saturday was to get a pic with Slapshot. After warmups we were hanging out on the concourse and who is the first mascot we see….Slapshot! Mission accomplished! That was easy. Turned out having seats on the glass and at the end of the row gave us the opportunity to get pics with several mascots as the roamed around all night so that worked out well.

Initially, we were kinda bummed out that our seats were down in the Team Toews end of the ice. We didn’t get to see much of Ovi in warmups and throughout the night as he was at the other end of the rink. Luckily the Breakaway Challenge was at our end so we got some Ovi then.
So once the Skills Competition concluded, the players began tossing pucks into the crowd. A couple players came in front of our seats along the glass and tossed some pucks to people around us. Then I see Ovi at center ice heading our way.
I’m not sure how he saw us so far away but once he was at the blue line he gave Annie and I the “nod” and headed toward us. He stopped in front of us and carefully angled the stick over the glass so that I could grab it. AWESOME!

I had to do a litte bit of defense from a couple of obnoxious Red Wing fans behind me who tried to grab it but they were easily defeted. We got a few high fives as we walked out of the arena from jealous fans. One guy asked if he could take his son’s picture with it. Other people were saying how cool it was that Ovi gave his stick to a Caps fan.
It was a great end to a really fun night. We will be sitting a few rows back from the glass on Tuesday night when the Caps are in town so I’ll try to get Ovi to look over so I can thank him again. THANKS OVI!
