A few weeks ago, ESPN’s Scott Burnside wrote how this year’s Winter Classic lacked national buzz. Here’s another sign things may not be going well– even in this area.

According to RMNB reader Matt O’Rourke, Modell’s is offering Alex Ovechkin’s Winter Classic jersey for 50 percent off, sliced from $180 to 90. It’s not even January 1st yet.

Blank Caps Winter Classic jerseys are also half off, going from $140 to $70. Caps Winter Classic player t-shirts, including Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov, are being sold for $15.

O’Rourke found this insane deal at the Modell’s in Springfield, Virginia. It’s unknown if all Modell’s in the mid-Atlantic area are participating in this sale. Modell’s website was not showing the half-off deal.

I asked O’Rourke how long the discount might last.

“I didn’t even ask,” he wrote to me. “I was so worried someone would realize they were making a huge mistake I tried to leave as fast as possible.”
