For about three minutes in the third period, the Caps trailed the Islanders by an unseemly three goals. The game looked like it was over. Finished. Dunzo.
Then Eric Fehr scored. Nicklas Backstrom too. It was a game again. The Capitals needed a big-time play from a big-time player. Alex Ovechkin was up to the challenge.
Off a beautiful face-off win by Nicklas Backstrom, Ovechkin wristed an impossibly fast puck past an overmatched Jaroslav Halak.
Tie game. Ovi’s 17th goal of the year. Look at this celebration.
Unfortunately, Evgeny Kuznetsov would take a four-minute double minor for high-sticking, leading to Johnny Boychuk winning the game in overtime.
Bud ladies and gentlemen, the Russian machine came through again. He is so dang good. He never ceases to amaze.
