Karl Alzner may have scored the Washington Capitals’ lone goal, but the sexiest play of the first period was authored by fourth-line center Michael Latta.

After Jay Beagle pushed the puck forward in the neutral zone, Latta took possession at center ice with a bunch of speed. Instead of dumping it into the zone as Eric Gelinas pressed him near the blue line, Latta put the puck through the Devils defenseman’s legs and blew by him.
Latta cradled the puck in the crease and nearly put it past Cory Schneider.
Let’s look at it one more time.

The most recent player to pull this move off successfully was Alex Ovechkin, who did it twice (1, 2) in the same week in October.
(Latta's future is not on the fourth line.)
