Washington Capitals prospect Caleb Herbert scored his first professional hat trick on Saturday. A few days after getting reassigned to ECHL South Carolina from Hershey, Herbert netted three goals as the Stingrays beat the Greenville Road Warriors 4-2.
To score his first of the game, Herbert found a soft spot between the faceoff circles on the power play and waited for Joe Devin to feed him the puck, making no mistake on the one-timer.
Herbert scored his second of the night off the rush. His overlap on a give-and-go with Cody Sylvester left him wide open in the slot. Yet again, Herbert sent the puck home.
Finally, Herbert’s third goal was a thing of beauty. Another perfect feed from Sylvester put the puck right on his stick. This time, he shot the puck not just towards or in, but through the net. Really.
Herbert, known as a sharpshooter from his days at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he scored 32 goals in 112 career games, now has four points in three career ECHL games. He also has five points (two goals, three assists) in 11 AHL games.
