October marks Hockey Fights Cancer month in the NHL. On Saturday, the Washington Capitals had their own special night at Verizon Center to raise awareness and money for cancer research. Yes, that’s why you’re seeing lavender literally every where on your TV screen tonight. The color represents all forms of cancer and is the official swatch of the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer month.
The jerseys, based off the team’s game-issued home red sweaters, feature a Hockey Fights Cancer patch on the front, and on the back features the players’ names and numbers in lavender twill instead of the traditional white. Their helmets this month also feature a Hockey Fights Cancer decal on the back.
The best part of the players getup, however, was the other stuff. Players such as goaltender Braden Holtby used lavender tape on their sticks. Alex Ovechkin, who always wears bright yellow laces, joined his teammates by wearing pink ones.
