Alex Semin and Alex Ovechkin score hat tricks in Semin’s farewell game in Krasnoyarsk

Alex Semin’s team defeated Team Datsyuk 10-9 in Semin’s farewell game from hockey on Thursday. Semin, 38, announced his retirement in May.

Semin’s farewell game, entitled The Match of World Hockey Stars – the Legendary Overtime, featured former Capitals teammates Alex Ovechkin and Viktor Kozlov. Other notables included Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov, former Capital Andrei Nikolishin (1998 Stanley Cup Final team), and Dallas Stars goaltender Anton Khudobin. The proceeds from the ticket sales went to orphanages in the area as well as to the development of sled hockey in Krasnoyarsk.

Semin and Ovechkin both netted hat tricks in the victory. Arguably the most beautiful play came when Semin assisted on an Ovechkin goal by chipping a pass overtop the net that fell perfectly in the crease for an Ovechkin put back.

Former Capital Viktor Kozlov named interim head coach of Metallurg Magnitogorsk

KHL’s Metallurg Magnitogorsk has fired head coach Ilya Vorobyev, naming former Capital Viktor Kozlov as his interim replacement.

This news came just hours after a 3-1 loss to HK Lada in which Capitals goaltending prospect Ilya Samsonov sustained a concussion.

Alex Ovechkin Attends Viktor Kozlov’s Wedding, They’re Still Bros

Six years ago, July 1st, 2007, Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee signed veteran Russian forward Viktor Kozlov from the New York Islanders to a two-year, $5 million deal. It proved to be a wise move. Kozlov played on the Caps’ first line with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, scoring 29 goals and tallying 94 points in 148 games. Ovechkin won the Rocket Richard and Hart trophies both seasons he was paired with Kozlov.

They’re still bros today. Ovechkin attended Kozlov’s wedding on Free Agent Frenzy Friday with fiancée Maria Kirilenko. I’d give you more juicy details about the wedding, but both Fedor and Igor, who can actually understand the Russian interwebs, are traveling today.

Report: Tomas Vokoun to Join the New Lokomotiv Squad

Tomas Vokoun, who was sidelined with an injury during the playoffs, announced at Kettler Monday that he will not be back next season. The Veteran Czech netminder, who signed with the Capitals last July to a one-year deal at the surprisingly low rate of $1.5 million, is rumored to join the new Lokomotiv squad.

As per the Czech website iSport.cz:

Behind the hockey scenes, there are talks that he [Vokoun] will be a goaltender for the Yaroslavl [Lokomotiv] in Russia!

Sport talked to a few scouts and players in Russia, and all of them confirmed: “We heard about it”. Some even added: “That’s a sure thing”.

The Band is Back Together! Russia Beat Slovakia! 3-1

Dear God, the Russian Machine does bleed red blood like the rest of us.

The wounds from the Caps’ round-one playoff loss are still raw, but we are on the mend. The downtrodden leader of the Caps’, Alex Ovechkin, has linked up with his countrymen to mend some of those wounds. The world championships began this weekend in Cologne, Germany, reuniting Ovechkin, Semyon Varlamov, and Alex Semin with their former teammates, Sergei Fedorov and Viktor Kozlov. Today’s match found the Capitals Russians facing off against the Slovakians, coached by former Caps benchmaster, Glen Hanlon.

The Russian goalie, massive Vasili Kosechkin, did not face a flurry of pucks until late in the second period. When the Slovaks finally mounted their offensive attacks, a sneaky wrister from former Capitals farmhand Ivan Majesky threatened to start a scoring spree. The Russians managed to hold off the Slovaks’ recovery, earning them a first round win– Alex Ovechkin’s first in four games.

Viktor Fedorov, a honoured Coach of Russia and the father of Future Hall of Famer Sergei Fedorov, recently sat down with Russian Sports Radio and explained his reasons for why he thought the Capitals failed in the first round of the playoffs against the Montreal Canadiens. Caps in Russia: Updates on Kozlov, Fedorov, Zednik, Jagr & More

We Miss You, Sergei.

We finally have another update from Fedor Fedin. It’s been awhile, but it’s for good reason. Since the KHL is about to wrap up the first half of it’s current season, we gave Fedor the tall task of tracking down every KHL player with any Washington Capital ties and asked him to let us know how they’ve been doing – good or bad. So basically if a guy has played for the Capitals in the past (Andrei Nikolishin), played on one of our AHL Affiliated Teams (Brandon Sugden), or been drafted by the team (Dmitri Orlov), they’re on the list. We thought this was a good idea because we honestly miss some of our favorite erstwhile Caps from the past like: Viktor Kozlov, Sergei Fedorov, Richard Zednik, and Chris Simon, and thought this would be a great opportunity for everyone to get caught up. Sadly, that human-ball-of-waste known as Jaromir Jagr is on the list, too, but since he’s one of Fedor’s favorite players on Avangard Omsk, we’re going to let it slide.
